It’s Never Too Late to Repent: The Pope In Redemption

17

Since we’ve recently had such spirited discussions on the Pope’s role in the cover up of sexual abuses by priests of the Roman Catholic Church, I thought I’d bring you some good news.

He gets it after all.

I was absolutely delighted to read today, in USA Today and on the CTV website, that the Holy Father is indeed someone who understands. Sources close to the local Catholic Church tell me that it was his initiative to move forward on this and that he was getting some push-back by a few Cardinals and many at the Vatican, who thought that any kind of apologia would be construed as an admission of guilt.

Regardless, this is a watershed moment for this Pope. He has been a disappointment to many, particularly considering his predecessor was entirely wonderful. Benedict apparently took the message of outrage expressed over the past months by the international community (including from this writer) and crafted a reasoned and sincere statement.

I believe him.

Rejoice! And read about it, here.

Yes, my wife has 3 aunts who are Catholic nuns and even they were not happy with Benedict. Nor have they ever warmed to his tenure.

What I find very refreshing with these 3 women, all in their 70′s who have spent over 50 years EACH as nuns, is their openness to share their opinions……and many stories. One nun even spent time working in the Vatican years ago and her stories(gossip) are just splendid.

I think many people tend to forget that those in the Catholic church are in fact real people with real opinions, and not just quiet sheep.

    Good news!

Ratzinger was appointed by John Paul the Great because of his tenacity in getting things done and holding steady athwart the assaults of liberalism against the Church. The media in general tried to portray him as a Richelieu or a Cranmer; he is neither and there are great things to be seen of him yet, even in his old age. Of course I could be seen as being biased here but I don’t give a damn.

I have to wonder what John Paul would have thought of him had he know of his complicity in the cover-up. John Paul was know to not suffer this type of behavior and is the only Pope to have ever replaced a Cardinal-in-waiting because of it. The man deserves his every bit of his Sainthood.

Agreed Alex, and I think the future will show that his choices on various matters from birth control, abortion and SSM, though going against the liberal onslaught, will prove to be that of the Spirit that guided him.

I’m just pleased that even though some of his surrounding bobbleheads needed to be dragged to the apologia, he took the initiative to do it–and did! Most John Paul-like of him.

In these trying times it’s comforting to know that the Church hasn’t lost it’s legendary sense of humour :

It is really odd where some people see humour, or should we say, just plain poor taste?

    • AGT says:

Oh c’mon Larry, you have to admit, the positioning was too funny. No harm, no foul. Lighten up my friend. I’d laugh at any picture like that. What was the photographer thinking?!

      • Larry Bennett says:

Gee Alex, you’re such a kidder! Scant weeks ago you were calling for mass executions, and now you want me to “lighten up”. What was the photographer thinking? Believe it or not Alex, not everyone’s mind is where yours and mine and the landlord’s are. At least the picture was not of a child, because that was the situation in 90% of these cases.

        • AGT says:

When was I calling for executions??? That want the death penalty for child molesters? I’d happily pull the lever on the old ‘lectric chair, no mater who it was.

          TWICE…

Actually, I got over that kind of humour about the third month of my 14th year. Possibly others can see humour in accusations of kiddie porn on computers of various secular teachers, one who taught at an exclusive boys school in Vancouver that many commentators here are familiar with. Another by a leader of B’nai B’rith and still another secular teacher charged with child sexual abuse in Coquitlam I believe it was. Really, there is nothing funny or even mildly droll in this sad business.

    • AGT says:

Larry, you cannot compare the actual, allegations of heinous acts by these teachers and the picture we were all laughing at. Very different pal. C’mon, relax.

If you couldn’t laugh you’d have to cry.

I take it the landlord is a student in this sort of thing; a lot of time on his hands maybe? Or maybe it’s all fantasy.
