UPDATE: Tony Parsons Announces Move to CHEK TV

21

I know what you’re thinking…

But I won’t. I will not gloat. Okay, well, maybe a little…

Here’s the reality:  When I broke the news that Tony was leaving Global for CHEK, well, you know, you were here…”Tsakumis is a fool!” “Where did you get this story from?” “No way this is true” “Tony investing? Not a chance”

It was endless…

On Puget Sound Radio, an otherwise great website for news about radio in B.C. and the Pacific Northwest (where most posters are very respectful and extremely intelligent) the anonymous cowards posting drivel were in full flight; the attacks, relentless, “There are so many details wrong with Tsakumis’ story, Parsons is not an investor and he will not anchor” “You are so think skinned Tsakumis” “This story is just idle gossip”

Really?

What I love more than anything about this piece, is that it showed the uber sensitive underbelly of the naives and fools in the media business who hate being trumped and how the poseurs and arm-chair heroes take themselves so incredibly seriously–it is to laugh!

My how the world has changed since the great Cameron Bell revolutionized the industry in this province.

As you know my friends, I have no agenda, I don’t need the money and I’m not shilling for anyone, except YOU and YOUR RIGHT TO KNOW.

And if that’s a condemnatory charge that I must bear, so be it.

Tony is not only an investor, but announced now (as predicted); will be back by March and will eventually anchor.  All details that were dismissed by the buffoon brigade and not just on Puget Sound Radio, but some were brave enough to show up here too.

Read about the announcement here.

Did I gloat too much?

Gosh, sooooooooooo sorry about that….

I’ll be a little more mature about matters tomorrow.

Maybe.

All mucking about aside:  This move by Tony could be the tectonic shift necessary to return some fire in the belly to many in the industry that have gotten lazy.  I sure hope so. It would provide you with much better coverage of the world around us.

I hope he comes in and gets a news show that reports does actual stories tells people truth and makes government answer questions or makes investigative reports well enough they wont run the next time he saw it when he started the Harvey-O’s , Websters and others who did such like them or not they did a decent job it would be nice to see someone bring that sort of style back on TV news it has so much power that is abused now with absolute crap , good work here as always keep at it

  2. Glen Hall says:

I certainly hope Tony will give some thought to asking Harv Oberfeld to come out of retirement and cover Vancouver for CHEK. For that matter, perhaps AGT should discuss such a roll with Tony as well.

  3. Henri Paul says:

    AGT said January 21, 2010,
    I don’t need the money
    ——————————————————————————————-
Neither do I, its just the ass hole gas stations, grocery stores , drug stores, I deal with that need the bloody stuff.

  4. Sandy says:

Thank you Alex for all the great articles, you were bang on with this one, good on ya!!
There is finally a glimmer of hope that we will get back our “real” media coverage that has been missing in this lost decade.
I bet Gordo and his handlers will be just slightly pisturbed.

  5. crankypants says:

Tony’s arrival on CHEK will probably help the TV station’s market share on the island. What they need to do is get some investigative reporters that are willing to go the extra mile and bring the populace real information on government, business etc. The MSM we are subjected to at present have dropped the ball big time with respect to real news, and if Tony and CHEK can one-up them a few times, then they could become a major player on the mainland as well.

If they expect Tony’s reputation to carry the day, then they will ultimately fade from the scene. It won’t be easy as I still believe that the advertisers of today are in a position to pressure the media to capitulate to their wishes in exchange for their advertising dollars.

As of today our media is basically substandard, to say the least. Talk radio is dead because there is only one entity in the game. Our print media is dead because the two major dailies are owned by one corporation. With luck, this could change if we get two different owners of the Sun and the Province, but I suspect that will not occur. Our television newscasts have deteriorated to the point that anything political may as well be reported by the pr body of whichever governing body they are reporting on.

    • AGT says:

There might as well be two different owners of the Sun and the Province. While the latter is busy working hard at providing reasonable, accurate news, the former is a lost cause. I can’t think of a paper that has fallen so far from grace as the Sun. McKnight, Yaffe, Hume, Mulgrew, Martin–PATHETIC!

  6. Norm Farrell says:

Puget Sound Radio, an otherwise great website for news about radio in B.C. . . .

And they keep us up to date on chemtrails and efforts of the international Communist conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids.

We can hope. Did you notice that Harvey Oberfeld recently accused Global of broadcasting an excellent news cast recently. I can think of two possible reasons. The possibility of real competition out of CHEK and the elimination of silver spooned amateurs from positions of authority at head office.

    • AGT says:

Hi Norm, great to hear from you as always. I actually thought Harvey’s comments on that story were bang on. I recall thinking the same thing as I was flipping back and forth from Global and CTV. IT seems that for all of their bitching about my criticisms of their programming, they have spontaneously changed since Tony’s departure….interesting…

They are obviously fools Alex, because I know, because you and almost all your commenters point out ad naseum that you know everything and even your opinions are factual and accurate. You haven’t had to entertain a fresh thought for years, or so it would seem.

How someone can detest Campbell as much as you claim to do yet still support the fence-posts with hair that helped put him in charge and have kept him there, the rest of the BC Lieberal Party, is beyond me. Of course I didn’t go to private school and don’t know everything!

    • AGT says:

      Um…okay…

Firstly, my attending St. George’s has nothing to do with my opinions. I know that’s a sore point for some people, but my parents made great sacrifices to put me through the best school in Western Canada. I worked hard, for the most part, and went off to get a pretty good education and develop a critical, mostly open and sometimes exceptionally functioning mind. It’s that type of thought process, koot, that leads me to the firm conclusion, that Gordon Campbell has damaged this province more than any other Premier in it’s history. The record speaks for itself, I don’t need to make it an opinion. It’s not a claim. I proffer it as a statement of fact.

My support of two people (Carole Taylor and Dianne Watts) who could stop the NDP from deepening the pain, is also based on my concern for the people of this once-great province.

As for your suggestion that I have not entertained an “original thought for years” is really a great, thick bit of pish. You’ve been on this site dozens of times. you might not agree, but fresh thoughts and keen insights is why we have quickly become one of the most read political websites in B.C. NO ONE else comments on as broad an array of topics as I do. No one. I’m sorry if that’s a bother. But I ALWAYS appreciate you coming by to take a jab or two. :-) I hope you’re keeping warm.

      • kootcoot says:

Regarding “original thought” and your lack of it – I guess what I mean is that I can already predict exactly what you will say in a posting, once I’ve read the headline. I like your insulting style, but wish you were a little more responsive to FACTS. For example when I pointed out elsewhere the results of studies (without naming them as I couldn’t find the links at the moment) indicating that pot instead of being especially harmful to lungs may actually have beneficial aspects, you, quoted some un-named expert from Coastal Health (you know personally all experts on everything, or so you imply) as PROOF that I was speaking through my hat.

Now I know that Harvard and UCLA are ghetto schools compared to St. Georges and full of leftie wingnuts with agenda, or maybe not. I personally have NO respect for any of the Health Authorities and consider them a construct of the Campbell government to insulate the government itself from accountability for healthcare – similar to the “privatization” of BC Ferries to remove it from public scrutiny. . Their bonuses to execs for budget cutting is big part of why I call my local one the Inferior Health Authority, our area suffered the largest cuts, most closures and reduction of services in the Province and the IHA execs enjoyed the biggest bonuses. As a result I now have to drive from 100 to 500 miles to obtain health care that used to be within walking distance of my home – essentially anything more than an aspirin.

My point is that once I called you on your so-called expert and pointed you in the direction of some information that contradicted your OPINION, you just kind of shut up and went away. I know I didn’t give you the exact links, but I’m sure that with your big $$$ education and “mostly open and sometimes exceptionally functioning mind” you could find the information with the info I provided – but your disappearance and silence pretty well summed it up for me. You already know it all and thats why I visit less and less, because there is no reason to read what I can already predict. I guess sometimes I just enjoy the irritation.

There is of course the fact that you actually think Stephen Harper is a good Prime Minister – not to mention the aforementioned point that you don’t seem to hold anybody but Campbell himself responsible for his transgressions against the citizens of BC. Without the fence-posts with hair Lord Gord wouldn’t even be leader of the party much less DickTater of the province. The only MLA to serve under Campbell that I have any respect for is Paul Nettleton, and look what happened to him!

        • AGT says:

          1) Well, aren’t you just Carnac the Magnificent. One of the main reasons I have not featured your blog, despite the exceptional perspectives on Victoria and other matters, is that the very same criticisms you make of me, I observe when reading you. Perhaps it’s just a case of familiarity breeding contempt. Perhaps if you lie down for awhile…”and this, too, shall pass…” :-)

          2) Your musings about where I went to school and what came of my experiences would be comical, if not tragic, since nothing you have described meets, at all, with my opinions or what I derived from a good education, both post-secondary or post-graduate. Should I apologize for having taken the time to attend classes at places I was blessed to attend? BTW, I never attended UCLA.

          3) The health authorities, we are agreed, are problematic. But not because the are constructs of Gordon’s govt. They are, simply put, heavily laden with bureaucratic excess. In researching how my youngest daughter’s heart ailment could have been overlooked, or just how predatory one particular povertarian group is on the DTES, it was like going through a maze. I was treated like a criminal for even asking questions–which you will agree, is my right to do.

          4) As a former hunter, I am very familiar with your neck of the woods, literally, and know it to be a SHAME that you must travel so far to seek health services. This is indeed a construct of the Campbell govt and one which is perhaps its greatest shame. There, we are agreed.

          5) I did not shut up and go away on any issue you or anyone else has raised. Some comments I reply to, as I see merit in doing so, others I post as part of the original story. IF you felt insulted or put-off, I apologize, but I cannot possibly be expected to remember how I felt about every comment posted on this blog. IF you can find the specific one and want to shoot me a note to my email address, I’m happy to review it and get back to you: agtsakumis@shaw.ca

          6) My opinions of the Prime Minister are quite well-known: I am NOT an Alliance Tory, but a VERY red Tory, and will remain that way. If he does something I consider wrong, I’ll say so. I’ve done it before. Please read on of the posts forthcoming today. You’ll understand…

          7) Supporting good Ministers in the Campbell govt is nothing I will ever move away from, regardless of my utter disdain for Gordon and the manner he has disgraced the Office of the Premier. IT is NOT an easy proposition sitting on his govt bench. In many ways, I feel sorry for many of them.

Glad you still visit. I enjoy our exchanges very much.

  9. Chancellor of the ExCHEKers says:

As one who doubted the veracity of Parsons’ move to CHEK, I will say, I was wrong, you were right. However, I am not sure the new CHEK has the necessary resources to really take on the big Vancouver stations. Thus, it might turn out that Mr. Parsons’ arrival in Victoria will not create the tectonic shift many people are hoping for.

    • AGT says:

Your Excellency, I am privileged to have you here on my blog. And I will also state, that time will tell as to what happens. But he is going over and he is there cheque in hand (along with some others) and I would just wait for the rest of the story….. Much appreciation for your appearance. Pls come by any time!

  10. Media type says:

I suggest AGT that you do some background investigation into how PSR is run and how it treats the free thinkers on that board. There is a large thread of radio and TV people who have been banned on that board and their interesting comments here:
    http://www.radiowest.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=5390
PSR is a well presented forum in sheep’s clothing but before you claim it as great please do some reading first. By the way, I do appreciate most of what you write and your viewpoint on the world but I fear your days are likely numbered on the PSR if you push the moderators button one day. Keep up the good work and move to RADIOWEST.ca
