Kennedy Stewart: A Career In the Punditry Built from Getting It Wrong

7

I have long-advocated for news bosses across the country to fire, on the spot, any producer or editor who simply runs down the list of available bloviating professors and chooses one for their “experience” and “knowledge”.

Experience?  From where, pray tell?  It’s a long way back up the stairs to the top of those ‘Ivory Towers’ for most professors.  Knowledge?  Sure, of the textbook material they’ve been regurgitating for twenty years. But most certainly not from any real life dialogue which doesn’t end with either a cheque or the obligatory ovation. Or some dizzy bubble head, being, oh so embarrassingly, unnecessarily deferential, “Thank you for your always valuable time, PROFESSOR” [superemotions file="icon_rolleyes.gif" title="Rolling Eyes"]

Choke, cough, spit and repeat.

Dr. Kennedy Stewart, of that great bastion of far left-wickedness, SFU, has made an entire career of being a pundit out of getting it wrong. Why?  Well, it’s really quite simple.  Not one of the good doctors ideas is not intentionally and purposefully spun to benefit the NDP. He’s a former candidate, a huge supporter of COPE in Vancouver and will not stumble over any antiquated, failed or generally discredited far left-leaning idea, concept, hypothesis or theory that he won’t want to immediately French-kiss.  And don’t write me about how SFU employs professors who won’t commit to any metamorphosis to get on the idiot-box at six:  Andre Gerolymatos was originally brought to Vancouver to be the holder of the Hellenic Studies Chair at SFU; primarily, to teach Greek language and culture, but was really, they discovered AFTER THE FACT, a history professor from a college in Quebec, specializing in Balkan conflicts.  Now he’s conveniently rebranded as a “Terrorism Expert”, whereas he previously mused about ancient wars and the like.  Neil Boyd was busy trying to shake off maniacal gadfly and stalker Rachel Marsden years ago, so that must have been around the time he switched from criminologist to be an media Ken-doll and “expert” on the “laurels” of Insite (the miserably failed harm seduction mad-science experiment).

But back to Doctor Stewart…

In his latest put-on, Dr. Stewart writes of how Gordon Brown, the BSing PM of GB, might have manufactured an attempted, but ultimately failed, coup d’ etat to bolster his support by otherwise forcing opponents, intra-Labour, into showing public support for the beleaguered Mr. Brown’s buffoonery and incompetence. Not content to stop after such frothy mythology-making, Dr. Stewart then proceeds to write of how such an implausible scenario might be of benefit to Gordon Campbell and Carole James.

Three points:  One: Dr. Stewart, clearly not a quick study of British politics, didn’t bother mention that the attempt to replace the rapidly deflating Mr. Brown was an effort by two of three weakest Labour MPs–no Michael Hazeltines here, and that neither had done the heavy-lifting of preparing for such an effort. But to make his point, he needed some fodder–so why look for it when you can just make it up as you’re going along?  Two: There is already a movement a foot to replace Gordon Campbell, that much is clear.  Not public enough for the good doctor to do more than speculate?  Only yours truly, Vaughn Palmer and CKNW–in that order, have publicly, openly speculated, with NW going so far as to ask Carole Taylor, just a few days ago, if she was interested (the ambiguous reply has caused a huge spike in people re-reading my breaking-news original story).  Three:  Being the good soldier of the far-left loons that would otherwise sink the NDP permanently, if only they’d be strategic enough to wrestle the controls from Carole James, Dr. Stewart longs for a day when the NDP know they’re place. That’s right, get rid of the moderates. All hail the hammer and sickle! Pictures of Che! Mugs of Lenin! Das Capital on steroids anyone? Bloody hell, Carole James isn’t wrong for her party because she’s too moderate, (that’s where the NDP can win), she’s wrong for the party because she’s a mealy-mouthed leader (who wouldn’t stand in the way of electing the likes of Moe Sihota provincial party president) and she’s a woeful campaigner, too.

You can read the latest effort by Dr. Stewart, here.  Perhaps his latest sprig of opinion isn’t as wrong as it is nonsensical, but wrong is in there somewhere. Trust me.  I have no idea why anyone would call Kennedy Stewart for any advice or comment other than to ask what kind of industrial-strength hair product contains such a lush Irish mop.  It’s perhaps his only redeemable quality.

There are some GREAT professor-commentators, like Dr. Norman Ruff from UVic and Dr. Daryl Plecas of the University College of the Fraser Valley, chief among them, with oodles of credibility.

But, Dr. Stewart would classify in the crudibility category, without question…nice enough chap, but a long list of mindless positions. The latest caught my attention, as being vacant of any reasonable and plausible premise.

    Hi Alex,
Couldn’t have said it better “an ass___ with a degree is still an ass___”

He is beyond belief. The stuff he comes up with is just so transparently in support of the far left that it cannot be believed as credible. He makes it up, I’m convinced.

    Hi Alex,

I’ve read Dr. Stewart’s “latest stuff”. Some of the stuff he writes makes sense to me:

    1) Hence the candidates are mainly self-employed professionals or businessmen…who are more likely to represent the interests of business and the developers than…the whole community…their literature baldly states that elected party officials are not under any ‘obligation to policies or platforms’…with $4 million spent by candidates seeking council positions with annual salaries of just over $50,000 (Bula 2006)”

Greed is the reason Vancouver is in the financial mess it’s in.

With respect, you’re wrong. Dr. Stewart makes HUGE leaps in logic. Namely…that self-employed professionals or businessmen have a somehow lesser conscience and that we are likely to represent “business first”. You’ll notice I wrote, “we”. I came from a successful career outside of journalism and media. Have you ever read anything of mine that is not heartfelt if not heartening? It’s what attracted you to this site and my writing before it, if memory serves me correctly. Similarly, Michael Geller, Ian Robertson and others who put their names forward to run, are quite decent guys from the business community, who want what’s best for the city; it’s people, and NOT business first. Dr. Kennedy very cleverly (although transparently) shills for the far-left loons of COPE and the NDP with rhetoric designed to appeal to your sense of decency. But the reality is, his beloved COPE destroyed Vancouver in unending navel-gazing and pandering to fringe elements like the anti-war movement and marijuana activists. And the notion that a ton of money is spent by these businessmen for spots tht are for just $50K each and that somehow means they are only there for the corporatists is as contradictory as it is absurd: For if the very same successful business people are comfy enough to begin with, then who cares what the bloody salary is for a councillor and why waste their time to pander to business if they’re not comfy off the top??? Kennedy Stewart is an insufferable fool, who manipulates his message to sound like a saviour, when, in fact, the only thing he wants saved is COPE from they’re self-imposed oblivion.

    Hi Alex,

Thank you for correcting me and for clarifying a few important details. You’re quite right. I have never read anything of [yours] that is not heartfelt if not heartening? It’s what attracted [me] to this site… your memory does serve your correctly.

This particular professor is actively campaigning to be the official advisor to the Local Government Task Force created to make local govt elections processes more accountable and transparent to the public. Let’s hope those involved read your column!
